Mexico City: Salón Palomilla

The architecture and design sets Salón Palomilla apart with its iconic open ceiling.

Wondering where to go in Mexico City for a swanky drink? I’ve got you covered.

Hidden up a flight of stairs in the charming neighborhood of Roma Norte you will find the ever stunning Salón Palomilla. This once upon a time best-kept secret of Mexico City has evolved into a popular destination and for good reason: as you reach the top of the stairs you will be immersed by the vintage-inspired interiors that celebrates Mexico City's golden era with its dramatic circular ceiling opening leaving you in awe of its architectural marvel.

My visit was very much unplanned and therefor with no reservation in hand, but I was lucky to score a seat in front of the DJ table where Elsa Bor was playing old-school hip hop tunes. For my drink of choice I decided to go for a classic La Paloma while vibing to the likes of Lauryn Hill and A Tribe Called Quest.

I had enjoyed dinner elsewhere that night, but there is also the option of grabbing bites with the wagyu beef sliders and gyro being recommendations from the open kitchen, which sits framed by the roaring, tiny but mighty wood-oven.

Thanks to the thoughtful design of the open ceiling, the lighting scheme changes subtly throughout the evening, transitioning from the warm glow of sunset to a more dramatic illumination at night.

The complete guide to reservations and seating.

The best way to ensure seating is to make a reservation in advance of your visit. The venue operates on a WhatsApp-based reservation system, which has become increasingly competitive as popularity has grown for this exceptional spot, so be sure to book early.

To make a reservation, simply write a WhatsApp message to their designated number. Be sure to include:

  • Your preferred date and time.

  • The number of people in your party.

  • Any special requests or occasions you’re celebrating.

The main room, with its proximity to both the oculus and the music setup, is undoubtedly the most sought-after seating area. Tables here offer the full Salón Palomilla experience, combining the architectural wonder above with perfect positioning for enjoying the nightly musical performances.

If you’re unable to secure a reservation for your preferred time, do not despair! The standing-room back bar offers its own unique charm for those doing a walk-in . While you won’t have the same vantage point of the oculus, you’ll find yourself in a vibrant space where the energy is often more casual and social. The mask collection and artwork in this area provide plenty of visual interest, and the quality of drinks remains consistently high.
