New York: Salon 94
On view: Takuro Kuwata | Together Shiyoze! (Let's Get Together!)
A favorite under-the-radar gallery on the Upper East Side.
Located in a historic 17,500-square-foot building along New York’s prominent Museum Mile and most notably across the street from the iconic Guggenheim Museum, you will find Salon 94, a contemporary art gallery showcasing renowned artists and selected works of design. Founded by Jeanne Greenberg Rohatyn in 2002, Salon 94 has expanded throughout the past two decades from showcasing a smaller group of artists’ projects to supporting and exhibiting an expansive program of established artists from around the world.
The stunning premises on 3 East 89th Street formerly belonged to arts philanthropist Archer Huntington and sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington before its residency by The National Academy of Design from 1940 to 2019. Originally built by architect and interior decorator Ogden Codman, the building later underwent restoration and renovations completed by the late Rafael Viñoly, architect and longtime collaborator of Greenberg Rohatyn.
The space is a work of art in its own right, expanding beyond the white cube of traditional gallery frameworks and embodies Salon 94’s dedication to cutting-edge art and design. While honoring the building’s stature and Greenberg Rohatyn’s enduring attitude towards art, the space offers both a site for cultural pilgrimage and experience in New York. No matter what’s on show, Salon 94 is highly worth the visit.
Vantage point from the exposed stairway that takes visitors from the ground floor through to the third floor of exhibition space.
How to make the most of your visit.
Before visiting I would refer to the Salon 94 website for what is currently on view. And below you can find general info for your reference.
3 E 89th Street
New York, NY 10128
Wednesday – Saturday | 11 – 6 PM
The gallery is a convenient stop on your way to Central Park or in combination with visiting The Guggenheim. There are tons of other museums and galleries nearby as well, which makes it an ideal destination for a cultural day. I recommend allotting about an hour for your visit, though in reality it will probably take less time, depending on how thorough you are and what’s on view.
